International conservation efforts discussed in Lithuania

Conservation efforts in Lithuania are of utmost importance for the global population of the Aquatic Warbler. This was concluded by the International Aquatic Warbler Conservation Team which met in Nemunas River Delta in November. Decline of peripheral populations and the need for large scale vegetation management in breeding sites were among main issues discussed during the meeting.

Experts note that crash of the Aquatic Warbler population in Hungary was of the main reasons for this meeting. The group discussed results of the latest research, project updates, threats to the population in wintering grounds and unification of monitoring methodology.

Participants also visited project sites and provided practical recommendations for the project team in Lithuania.  „Their help and expert assessment is invaluable for developing a well-argued new agri-environmental scheme proposal. We need all help we can get“, – project manager Zymantas Morkvenas said.

It was concluded that urgent and coordinated international efforts are key in order to protect this globally threatened species.
