Baltic Environment Forum said its' opinion on car pollution regulation

On 12 November specialists of Baltic Environmental ForumEnvironmental Coalition and Sustainable Development Initiatives – DVI met with the press to present its position on car CO2 regulation. Position encouraging to represent Lithuanian and European consumer interests and climate change policy goals instead of indulging for polluting car manufacturers was handed in the Environment Minister on 11 November.

Lithuania, as a country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the end of November have to submit the adjusted proposal for new car CO2 regulation after 2020 to the

Council of the EU. The lower CO2 emissions of the car, the less fuel it consumes. So it depends on negotiation process leaded by Lithuania, how effective new cars will be and how much Europeans will spend on fuel in the next decade.

Stricter regulation of CO2 emissions from cars is definitely beneficial to everyone – to European consumers, energy security, environment and business. Nevertheless, preliminary proposal of Lithuania seems to be very similar to Germanys’ possision strongly critisized by European Parliament as beeing insufficientlly ambitious.
