Discussion “Marine environment protection- values in the places where we do not see them"

On the 23rd of February, scientists, environmentalists, specialist of wind energy and fishermen discussed about the values of the Baltic Sea. The experts having a good understanding of biodiversity of the Baltic Sea, shared their knowledge and insights inviting for the discussion- why so many of us do not care about the treasures of the Baltic Sea and the ones who care, face the issues how to share them?

The biodiversity of the Baltic Sea is really special. Do you know that there are the Baltic reefs covered with the Furcellaria lumbricalis algae in the depth of 20 meters and that the rare species of  duck are wintering on the coastline of Lithuania? These are the nature objects valuable and protected in entire Europe.

Lithuania is a marine country but so often sea is only remembered when the storm destroys coastal infrastructure or when the summer season starts. On the other time of the year, sea is only needed only for those whose activities are directly related to the Baltic Sea. These- environmentalists, wind energy specialists and fishermen- sometimes meet difficulties how to share the resources of the Baltic Sea.

Participants of the discussion – prof. Darius Daunys, head of Marine Science and Technology Centre (Klaipėda University), Mindaugas Dagys, ornithologist of Nature Research Centre, Linas Ložys, head of Marine Ecology Laboratory, representatives from the office of National Protected Areas, Egidijus Bukelskis, a doctor of zoology, member of Lithuanian Hunters and Fishermen Society, Algirdas Aušra, head of Fishermen and Fish related industry Association „Baltijos žvejas“, Tadas Navickas, head of  JSC „4Energia“.

The Baltic Sea begins from you!
