Greenpeace flies over Vilnius against nuclear energy

International environmental organisation came to Lithuania to highlight the importance of voting against nuclear energy in the upcoming referendum this weekend.

Today a Greenpeace Zeppelin flew over the city of Vilnius, calling upon Lithuanians again to go to say NO to a new nuclear power plant this Sunday. Attached to the airship was a banner reading: “14/10/2012 – NO to Nuclear energy”. The environmentalists want the Lithuanians to decide about their future based on facts, not propaganda and manipulation.

“We find important for the Lithuanian public to understand that they are now deciding a future for not only themselves, but for at least the next 100 years – for their children and grandchildren. It is in your hands what life will you create for them – a life of fear and threat, or a safe and modern one, ” added A. Zlatnanska.

Greenpeace campaigns against nuclear projects world-wide, including neighbouring countries.

Although the choice of an energy mix is a national decision, the exposure to nuclear risk knows no borders, as it is visible in the rightful resistance in Lithuania against the dangerous nuclear projects in Kaliningrad and Belarus. No nuclear power station can completely exclude the possibility of a large accident.

“The Lithuanian government is misleading the public by claiming the new reactor will be safe. This is the same as to put up a barrel of gunpowder and say it poses no danger. Nobody can guarantee that this country or region will be stable for hundred years.

In Lithuania, the plant operator will have a limited liability of just over 120 million euros. Would this be enough to cover full costs for destroyed lives, homes and environment? The Lithuanian government and nuclear proponents are avoiding the debate about such important issues, probably because they have no answer to this,” said Kestutis Navickas, a chairman of the Environmental Coalition in Lithuania.
