Baltic Actions for Reduction of Pollution of the Baltic Sea from Priority Hazardous Substances (BaltActHaz)

This project aims to support Baltic States in implementing the EU Water Framework Directive and other directives concerning reducing priority hazardous substances in waters.

Project activities

  • To investigate on the occurrence of selected WFD (and HELCOM) priority substances and some pollutants of national importance in wastewater, sewage water, surface water and sediments, also to propose relevant monitoring measures for future;
  • To improve the current permit (IPPC and non-IPPC) quality and to use the permits as tool for efficient enforcement of the legislation;
  • To enhance better chemicals management at pilot enterprises;
  • To train stakeholders to make best use of the REACH mechanism;
  • To enhance the dialogue among authorities, industry, science and NGOs/society representatives for improving hazardous substances management at different levels of their occurrence in the life-chain (production, waste water, human being);
  • To facilitate the network of Baltic stakeholders with international experts on new legislative developments regarding hazardous substances control and reduction in Baltic States.
  • To develop a concept for raising awareness at the general public on hazardous substances aiming at active policy making participation and at change of consumption patterns.
